Tips to help keep your skin hydrated

How to hydrate skin

Ways to add and hold onto moisture

Our skin barrier functions as a natural protective shield between us and our environment. Dry and cracked skin makes it easier for harsh elements and pathogens to enter our body. Therefore, maintaining skin hydration is essential for healthy, radiant skin.

Dehydrated Skin vs Dry Skin

Dry skin is a skin type and it happens due to a deficit in sebum/oil-producing glands. Sebum/oil keeps our skin surface lubricated and protected. When we don't produce enough of it, as part of our Natural Moisturizing Factor, the moisture barrier breaks down causing our skin to become dry and flaky.

Dehydrated skin however, is a skin condition due to a lack of water and can be caused by a variety of factors, including alcohol, caffeinated drinks and high-sodium foods… to mention a couple—all of which draw water from our skin. We can identify this issue by doing a “pinch test”: Pinch your cheek. If it stays tented, your skin is likely dehydrated. Other signs of dehydration include a) dull skin b) fine lines and wrinkles b) dark circles under your eyes

Unfortunately, we can have both dry and dehydrated skin at the same time. While it's sometimes difficult to tell the difference, you can treat them simultaneously by adding the right hydrating skin products to your beauty routine.

Tips to help keep your skin hydrated

  1. Drink Plenty of Water & Stay Hydrated Internally: Hydration starts from within, so be sure to drink an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, or more if you're physically active or in a hot climate. Consume hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and celery, which have high water content and can contribute to your overall hydration levels.

  2. Use a Humidifier: Especially during dry seasons or in environments with low humidity, such as heated indoor spaces during winter, using a humidifier can add moisture to the air and help prevent your skin from becoming overly dry.

  3. Moisturize Regularly: Apply a moisturizer suited to your skin type after cleansing to lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, and natural oils, which help attract and retain moisture in the skin.

  4. Choose Gentle Cleansers: Opt for mild, hydrating cleansers that won't strip away your skin's natural oils. Avoid over-cleansing your skin and try limiting the usage of face wipes that can be infiltrated with unnecessary or even irritating ingredients.

  5. Exfoliate Gently: Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing moisturizers to penetrate more effectively. However, be gentle, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin, and avoid over-exfoliating, which can lead to irritation and dryness.

  6. Protect Your Skin: Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can contribute to dehydration and premature aging. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours when outdoors.

  7. Eat a Healthy Diet: Incorporate foods rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fatty fish. These nutrients help support overall skin health and hydration.

  8. Limit Hot Showers: While hot showers may feel soothing, they can strip your skin of its natural oils and contribute to dryness. Opt for lukewarm water instead and limit shower time to no more than 10-15 minutes.

  9. Hydrating Masks: Treat your skin to hydrating masks or overnight treatments containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or honey. These masks can provide an extra boost of hydration and nourishment, leaving your skin feeling soft and supple.

Remember that consistency is key when it comes to maintaining skin hydration. Establishing a regular skincare routine tailored to your skin type and needs can help keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing. If you have specific concerns about your skin or hydration levels, consider consulting a dermatologist for personalized advice and recommendations.
